Chapter Four
“Mr. Gairdner? Sir?”
A tall, muscular man with a tanned face and brown hair stared at him. Lang smiled back, wondering who it could be before he recognized Elliott Greene. He’d only seen the man once, or maybe twice, so it was surprising that he’d been recognized with his new beard and his hair out.
“Elliott? Good to see you again. Is this the business venture you mentioned?”
“That’s correct, sir. I manage Ray’s Cycles these days. I’m a part-owner in it. That’s why…” His voice trailed off, but Lang understood.
“Exactly. It was an excellent use of your inheritance. My friend and I are considering renting quad bikes to drive out the lake.”
“The lake is well worth a visit, sir. It’s about twenty miles around it and the quad bikes will do that easily. They travel on sand as well as the track, but be aware that there’s an extra fee if you should happen to get bogged and we have to come and pull you out.”
“I have no intention of getting bogged,” said Vidal.
Lang did his best to hide his grin and Elliott answered quickly, “No, sir. Of course not.”
They talked some more with Elliott, but Lang was sure they could manage the quad bikes, so they booked them for eleven the next day.
He turned to Vidal. “Maybe we could take a picnic with us and rest halfway around the lake. Take a break and eat lunch.”
Vidal looked as if he was about to refuse, then a thoughtful look crossed his face and he nodded abruptly. “Is there a place here that makes picnics?” he asked Elliott.
“Yes, sir. The Bottle of Milk does.”
“All right. I’ll bring the food.”
“Great that’s organized. Elliott, before we leave, can you tell us which store rents out wetsuits? Is it the clothing store right here?”
Elliott frowned. “I’m not sure, sir, but Hudson will definitely know. You should ask him.”
“Hudson?” queried Vidal.
“He owns the clothing store. You walked though it to get here.”
Lang thought Vidal was about to tell Elliott he knew where he’d come from, but the man’s lips shut tightly. Once again, Lang hid his smile. Already, Vidal was getting the message. Maybe one day soon he’d stop being so grumpy and argumentative all the time. It must be very frustrating not to be able to do what he wanted to do, but there were plenty of good things about being here at Two Waters. Lang planned to take Vidal to bed again this afternoon to teach him some more good things.
There was a middle-aged woman in the clothing store calmly helping a small child try on sunhats, and a flamboyantly gay man a little younger than himself with an armload of clothing he was re-hanging on the various racks. Lang followed Vidal as he marched across to the man.
“We want to rent wetsuits,” Vidal said.
The man smiled at them. “Dahlings, I might be able to help you. Is this just a once-off thing or will you need them for a week?”
“How much are they? It might be better to buy them.
